The Whitehouse, on a radical reversal of it previous position, has signaled the Pentagon to explore border control patrols, according to a report from Lolita Baldor of the Associated Press. Curiously, the announcement follows the "Minuteman Goes To Washington " tour of the country by Minuteman Tony Dolz. Tony carried a petition calling for the immediate deployment of troops at the border. Only a few months earlier, Department of Defense Secretary Rumsfeld had disavowed any responsibility for the security crisis at the border. “Secretary Rumsfeld Interview with Andres Oppenheimer, Miami Herald QUESTION: Let me ask you one last question on the Minutemen on the Mexican border. What is your position on these civilians trying to patrol the border and keeping migrants (foreign aliens) from coming in? RUMSFELD: The Department of Defense of the United States has no role with respect to borders, and it's not something that we're involved with, and the President of the United States has commented on it. It's not within the jurisdiction of Department of Defense.” Given earlier comments from Rumsfeld, what could have prompted the President to suddenly consider deploying the National Guard or reserve military to our broken borders four years after 9/11? My name is Tony Dolz. I am a foreign-born Hispanic legal immigrant, now a naturalized citizen. My wife is a Danish-born legal immigrant. I am one of the founding members of Minutemen and a candidate for the California 41 st Assembly District. As a family we celebrate legal immigration and oppose illegal immigration. Between April 13 th and 24 th , I traveled alone coast to coast calling on key senators of the Senate Judiciary Committee on their home districts during the Easter recess. It was a grueling drive through 11 states and the District of Columbia . I carried with me a petition from the thousands of Minutemen, women and children of this nation and fellow citizens. The Minuteman Petition demands that while the Senate and the House remain deadlocked and unable to guaranty our safety given our porous borders, that the President must deploy troops to the border immediately. The petition carries an ultimatum. If the President fails to send troops to secure our borders immediately the Minutemen will start building a fence with volunteers on Memorial Day. Last night, while we slept, over 5000 foreign aliens violated our borders. 5000 more will violate our borders tonight. According to the Border Patrol, the number of crossing has dramatically increased. The increase is credited to President Bush and Senators Kennedy, McCain and Specter for pitching a Guest Worker/Amnesty that would reward law-breaking illegal-labor profiteer employers and the illegal aliens in their employ. The latest Zogby polls show that nearly 80% of Americans consider illegal immigration a serious problem. When given a choice between the House of Representative's Sensenbrenner Bill HR 4437, which passed in December, and the Senate proposals containing amnesty, a super majority of Americans choose HR 4437. HR 4437 calls for securing our borders and deportations and purposely rejected amnesty for those who are already here violating our laws. The Zogby poll indicates that border security and immigration chaos has now surpassed the war in Iraq and the economy as the most important concern heading into the November elections. Recent elections results do not bode well for Republicans or Democrats that pander to the employers of illegal aliens. In Herndon , Virginia all the pro-illegal alien city government incumbents were thrown out on the street and strong pro border security and immigration law enforcement candidates were elected to office. Recent news from Nebraska should send a chill up the spine of every Republican Congressman. This week popular coach turned Congressman, Tom Osborne (R-NE), unexpectedly lost his bid for governor. Why? One reason--while in Congress he voted for in-state tuition for illegals. Last month his opponent, Governor Dave Heineman, vetoed the Iowa version of the bill. But the legislature overrode his veto and gave in-state tuition to illegals living in that state! The voters were obviously ready for bear when Election Day rolled by. The Governor, who ran as the toughest guy against illegal immigration, solidly defeated Osborne, whose voting record was not that bad on immigration except for that one vote. Osborne had never received less than 82% of the vote in his congressional races. Tuesday he could only garner 44% of the republican vote! I am a Republican candidate for the California Assembly and spend considerable amount of time walking my district calling on registered Republicans. The message that I get from an overwhelming number of them is that they are extremely angry with President Bush's unwillingness to secure the border and above all with his wish for rewarding 12 to 20 million illegal aliens with amnesty. Most people know amnesty when they see it and the President's spin has no traction with the voters in my district. A Democrat take over of the House in November and the subsequent threatened “impeachment” of the President as hinted at by House Minority Leader Pelosi would make the President's remaining days filled with gloom. As I carried the Minuteman Petition through our great country, supporters greeted me at every point. Hundreds waited for me outside of Senator John McCain's office and loudly complained about McCains comments that American's would not pick lettuce for $50 per hour. Some demonstrators brought their resumes and applications for the job on the spot. In my speech I pointed out that the Hew Hispanic Center indicated that only 3% of illegal aliens work in agriculture, 97% work in construction, manufacturing, services and administrative work. In other words, 97% of illegal aliens are doing jobs that Americans want and need, but that are unwilling to do for depressed illegal alien wages. The Department of Labor statistics show that the going wage for workers at meat packers in the 1980's was $19 per hour. Today the workers doing the same job earn just under $9 per hour. The oversupply of cheap desperate illegal aliens is depressing salaries and this does not make full employment that satisfactory to the American worker. Once at the Capitol, my tour was greeted by a rally organized by the 9/11 Families for a Secure America. At the end of the rally the families of the victims of 9/11 and I walked over to the Whitehouse to deliver over 570,000 signatures that were collected during the Easter recess calling for securing our borders now. The Whitehouse staff refused to accept our Minuteman Petition and the signatures. I did present a set of the Petition and 26,000 signatures to the Senate Judiciary Committee and to Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist. Why has the President apparently reverse himself and asked the Pentagon to study sending troops to the border? We will never know, especially in an election year, but I would like to think that we Minutemen, operating within the law, are forcing our elected officials to enforce the laws that they have sworn to do when they took office. I invite all concerned Americans to remind our elected officials that you are watching them and that you will give them what they deserve at the ballot box in November.
